Celestron NexStar 6SE
The 8SE's lighter little brother. Easier to carry, still finds everything.
around $1,199
Same GoTo brain as the 8SE in a 6-inch package you can actually carry to a dark site without negotiating with your spine. You give up some light-gathering; you gain a scope that leaves the house more often. And the best telescope, as I keep saying, is the one you actually use.

Why we like it
- Computerized GoTo finds 40,000+ objects
- Much lighter than the 8SE — genuinely portable
- Long f/10 focal length great for planets and the Moon
Keep in mind
- Less light grasp than the 8SE for deep sky
- Needs power (battery pack or AC)
- Batteries drain fast in the cold
