Sky-Watcher Evostar 102
Old-school refractor. Razor-sharp Moon, zero maintenance.
around $280
A 102mm f/10 achromat: long tube, smooth focuser, and mirrors you'll never align because there aren't any. The Moon and planets look razor-sharp, and it doubles as a spotting scope by day. Simple, honest, quietly excellent — the tortoise of telescopes.

Why we like it
- Refractor — never needs collimation
- Superb lunar and planetary sharpness for the money
- Doubles as a daytime spotting scope
Keep in mind
- Optical tube only — needs a mount and tripod
- Achromatic design shows false color on bright objects
- Long tube is awkward to store and transport
